Florida construction permit trends: what the data reveals

Published · 6 min read · PermitData

What does a season of construction actually look like across a state? Using PermitData's Florida demo sample — 112,873 permits across 37 jurisdictions over a rolling 90-day window — here's what the data reveals. (These figures are a demonstration sample, not a comprehensive statewide census.)

Where the building is happening

Activity concentrates in Florida's large metros. Hillsborough County (Tampa) leads the sample, followed by Manatee, Jacksonville, and Miami-Dade. You can see the full ranking on the coverage pages or the county leaderboard in the live demo.

What kind of work dominates

Re-roofing and building-envelope work lead the trade mix — roofing is the single largest identifiable trade, with window & door, HVAC, and electrical close behind. That mix reflects Florida's hurricane exposure and aging housing stock: much of the activity is replacement and hardening, not just new construction.

The dollars involved

The sample represents roughly $7.4B in reported construction value over the window — a reminder that permit records aren't just counts. Every row carries a job valuation you can aggregate by county, trade, or contractor.

Why the pattern matters

For suppliers and contractors, the concentration of roofing and envelope work in specific counties is a targeting map. For researchers and investors, permit volume and value are a leading indicator of where capital is flowing. And because every record is normalized, you can slice these trends by trade_category, source_municipality, or date without per-city cleanup.
